Memory, Place, Desire
Cantor Fitzgerald Gallery, Haverford College
October 24 - December 14, 2014
Curator: Carol Solomon
The first exhibition in the United States devoted exclusively to contemporary art of the Maghreb and the Maghrebi diaspora, MEMORY, PLACE, DESIRE features the works of 13 artists from the North African countries of Algeria, Morocco, Tunisia, and the Maghrebi diaspora. Across media, these artists’ photographs confront home and migration; video installations explore mystical journeys; multi-media forensics preserve traces of the human; and concrete sculptures speak back to socioeconomic injustice. The exhibit includes the work of Mustapha Akrim, Kader Attia, Yto Barrada, Zoulikha Bouabdellah, Mohamed El baz, eL Seed, mounir fatmi, Hassan Hajjaj, Nadia Kaabi-Linke, Driss Ouadahi, Younès Rahmoun, Zakaria Ramhani, and Willis from Tunis—in painting, photography, drawing, video installation and sculpture.
Curated by Visiting Associate Professor Carol Solomon with contributions by students in Haverford College ICPRH303 Curatorial Praxis: The Making of an Exhibition (Spring 2014).
Memory, Place, Desire: Contemporary Art of the Maghreb and Maghrebi Diaspora is made possible with support from the John B. Hurford ’60 Center for the Arts and Humanities and Mellon Creative Residencies.
