Exercises on Democracy
1st White House Biennial, 2013
White House Biennial
1 June - 10 July 2013
Curator: Orlando Britto Jinorio
Exercises on Democracy is dedicated to Joseph Beuys while the Chinese artist Ai WeiWei is the honoured artist of this first edition of the White House Biennial.
In dialogue with their works a selection of outstanding international artists are being invited to participate by proposing installations, sculptures, performances, videos, paintings, drawings and other forms of visual art.
Nowadays, in the time of decadence, the Greek Democrat has no house. None of political parties that claim for the governing of the country, where democracy is born, doesn’t represent him effectively. On “Exercises on Democracy” Nikos Charalambides deals once again the concepts of home, house and home country, by creating a heretical “at home biennial” that extends from the home of the participating artists to the White House, the emblematic building which houses the President of the United States and his family.
In the duration of the following two years the White House Biennial will be organizing a series of exhibitions in galleries, museums or other alternative spaces. In addition, the W.H.B. ongoing project, could be presented in a variety of events, conferences, festivals or biennials.
It is a series of multilevel events lasting two years, which are conducted as a part of the expanded project www.whitehousebiennial.com in various exhibition centers, international museums, galleries and other alternative spaces, under the custody of Orlando Britto Jinorio and co-curated by Mary Stathis and Sotiris Bahtsetzis.
