Dans un monde dominé par le déplacement de marchandises, de fonds monétaire et d’information, Mounir Fatmi déplace les identités des personnes qui acceptent d’échanger leurs noms contre le sien.
Performance commencée durant une résidence à la Cité Internationale des Arts à Paris en 1999, pendant laquelle il offre au passant comme œuvre originale un badge sur lequel il écrit son nom et prénom.
Ainsi ce petit espace blanc du badge, ce territoire personnel deviens une vraie terre d’accueil. Par la suite les badges récoltés dans un pays, sont déplacés vers d’autres pays et proposés à d’autres personnes de nationalité et d’origine différentes.
De ces rencontres est né le projet Libre-échange œuvre en déplacement, appartenant au public, refusant toute idée de frontière et invitant à la limite du sacré, en ouvrant ce cercle parfait du club, qu’il soit religieux, social, économique ou artistique.

In a world dominated by the movements of goods, of money and of information, Mounir Fatmi shifts the identities of the people who agree to exchange their name against his.
This performance was started when he was in residence at the "Cité Internationale des Arts" in Paris in 1999 : he offered a badge to the passers-by (an original work of art) on which he had written both his name and his first name.
Thus, this small white surface on the badge, this personal territory, became a land of asylum. Thereafter, the badges collected in a country were moved towards other countries and proposed to other people with different nationalities and origins.
From these meetings arose the project Libre-échange, a work on the move, a work which belongs to the public, refusing the very idea of a frontier and which leads to the border of what is sacred by breaking this perfect circle, that of the club, whether it is religious, social, economic or artistic.
