Compilation sonore composée de trois pistes, "Fuck the Architect » explore les rapports de l'architecture aux pouvoirs politiques, économiques et aux individus. Elle se conçoit comme une entreprise de déconstruction de nos conditionnements sociaux et des dogmes religieux et culturels.
La bande-son se compose des enregistrements audio réalisés par mounir fatmi lors de journées spéciales organisées par les pouvoirs publics à Mantes la Jolie située en banlieue parisienne. Le programme de ces journées se conclut par la destruction de tours d'habitation construites dans les années 60 et 70 à destination des travailleurs pauvres et immigrés. Le son des sirènes d'alarme annonçant les explosions se mêlent aux commentaires hésitants des habitants des quartiers au sujet des événements. Le bip d'un moniteur cardiaque rythme l'érection et l'effondrement des tours et des distorsions sonores viennent constituer une ornementation musicale aux accents inquiétants. Ces dernières proviennent d'une troisième source sonore, où nulle voix humaine ne se fait entendre, obtenue à partir de la vidéo « Colors of Deportation », montage d'images d'archives des camps de concentration nazis de la seconde guerre mondiale.
Cette compilation sonore met en évidence une violence du bêton exercée sur les habitants. Elle observe la désindividualisation des êtres humains, transformés en foule anonyme et révèle ou rappelle que l'établissement de catégories sociales et l'attribution d'espaces spécifiques recouvrent des enjeux de pouvoir, de domination et de contrôle des populations, avec pour objectif plus ou moins explicite l'exclusion, la mise à l'écart, voire l’extermination. La compilation sonore « Fuck the Architect » déconstruit une illusion, celle d'une architecture au service de l'homme.
Les démolitions sont conçues comme de grandes opérations de communication par les pouvoirs publics qui y voient une occasion d'effacer la mémoire d'une forme de ségrégation sociale. « Mais le béton avait déjà contaminé les cerveaux, et malheureusement les barres et les obstacles se trouvent maintenant dans la tête. A sound compilation made up of three tracks, “Fuck the Architect” explores the relations be-tween architecture, political and economic powers and individuals. It consists in an attempt to deconstruct our social conditionings as well as religious and cultural dogma.
The sound piece is made up of audio recordings conducted by mounir fatmi during a several-day event organized by the local authorities in Mantes-la-Jolie, a suburb of Paris. The program of these days was concluded by the demolition of housing projects built in the 1960s and 70s for poor immigrant workers. The sound of alarm sirens announcing the explosions combines with hesitant comments by the neighborhood’s inhabitants about the event at hand. The beep of a heart rate monitor marks the tempo of the erection and collapse of the towers and distorted sounds make for an ominous musical ornamentation. These sounds come from a third source, in which no human voice can be heard, taken from the video “Colors of Deportation”, a montage of archival footage from the Nazi concentration camps of World War II.
This sound compilation underlines the violence of concrete against the inhabitants. It observes the de-individuation of human beings turned into an anonymous crowd, and reveals or reminds us that establishing social categories and attributing specific spaces has to do with issues of power, domination and control over populations, with the more or less explicit objective of ex-cluding, casting aside, or even exterminating. The “Fuck the Architect” sound compilation de-constructs an illusion, that of an architecture that would serve mankind.
Demolitions are conceived as large-scale communication operations by public authorities, who see them as a way of erasing the memory of a form of social segregation. “But concrete had al-ready contaminated people’s minds, and unfortunately the bars and obstacles are in their heads now.
